Actress Vijayta Pandit is currently in the spotlight, sharing various personal insights. Among the topics she’s discussed is an old romance, during which she revealed how this veteran actor gave her false promise of marriage.
The 1981 film “Love Story,” directed by Rahul Rawail, featured Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav in lead roles. While shooting the two developed a romance that soon became the talk of the town, but it didn’t last and led to multiple controversies.
Vijayta opens up about her equation with Kumar Gaurav
Years later, Vijayta opened up about her relationship with Kumar, reflecting on her love life, his broken engagement, feelings of betrayal, and his eventual marriage to Sanjay Dutt’s sister. She emphasised that her involvement was not the reason behind Kumar’s split from Reema Kapoor and acknowledged him as her first love—the one who had an impact on her.
During a candid conversation with Lehran Retro, Vijayta Pandit shared the hidden details of her relationship with Kumar Gaurav and how it ultimately soured. She recalled, “Bunty (Kumar Gaurav) was the first boy I ever hugged while filming ‘Love Story.’ If you look at any classic romance—like Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in ‘Bobby,’ or Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh in ‘Betaab’—many of those on-screen couples fell in love for real. You have to immerse yourself in the emotions while filming. It was a new experience for me; he was the first boy to touch me, and that’s how we fell in love. Bunty was quite taken with me; he would hold my hand and dance with me. He was such a charming guy.”
Vijayta reveals Kumar’s father didn’t approve of their relationship
She added that Kumar Gaurav’s father disapproved of their relationship, saying, “His father, film producer Rajendra Kumar, was quite upset. He would drink and tell Bunty that as his son, he deserved to marry a princess. He insisted he would find a girl from a good family for him. Hearing this made me very anxious, but Bunty always reassured me that he loved me. They would drink and argue about it, and I tried to distance myself from the whole situation.”
When Kumar Gaurav got engaged to Reema
She explained that even though Kumar Gaurav was engaged to Raj Kapoor’s daughter, he was determined to marry her and had even promised to do so. Vijayta shared that Rajendra Kumar noticed his son’s feelings for her, prompting him and Raj Kapoor to arrange Gaurav’s engagement to Reema.
She attended the engagement ceremony and noticed Reema put a large diamond ring on Gaurav’s finger. When she complimented the ring, Gaurav reacted angrily, saying he would get rid of it if she didn’t like it. Vijayta thought he was acting irrationally. Despite the engagement, Gaurav continued to visit her while she never visited his home.
Why did the engagement break?
Vijayta made it clear that she had no role in Kumar Gaurav’s broken engagement with Reema. She said, “My parents were very upset and worried. My father said he would talk to Rajendra Kumar to make sure Bunty didn’t come around anymore since he was engaged.
Bunty told my mother he would only marry me, despite being engaged. He promised he would marry me, but then I learned he was seeing Namrata Dutt. That’s why he ended things with Reema, and I had nothing to do with it.”
