Beetroot
The bulbs are an easy vegetable for first-time gardeners. Once the seeds germinate, they don’t require much attention.
Sow the seeds in shallow drills or pots. If you already started a beetroot plant indoors, you can move it outside — just make sure the roots have yet to develop.
Sweetcorn
If you want sweetcorn, May is the last time to sow it. After May, it will be too hot to allow the vegetable to ripen.
Gardener’s World said to sow the plant in a multi-celled tray indoors, and plant outside when the seedlings are large enough to handle.
Don’t miss…
Rocket
The leafy vegetable will grow fast, and it doesn’t take up much space. You can sow the seeds in a pot, putting them on the surface of moist, multi-purpose compost.
Be sure to protect them from slugs and snails, as the pests will eat holes in the leaves. If you sow new seeds every few weeks, you can have a continuous crop all summer long.
Carrots
Carrots are an easy to grow vegetable, as well as very versatile for cooking. To sow, place the seeds in shallow drills or pots of stone-free soil.
The seeds must remain moist during the germination process, so be sure to water them continuously for 10 to 14 days.
Basil
Basil is a great summer plant, as it grows best in heat and sun. Sow the herb in May and keep in a pot on the windowsill.
It can also grow outside, but it’s best to sow it in seed trays and transplant later.
