Lucknow: Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Singh on Monday sought to downplay the controversy over a Trinamool Congress MP mimicking Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and BJP’s allegation that it was an insult of the Jats, saying that nobody understands and does humour better than the Jats.
“To bring caste into everything (is not good). The section of the Constitution under which he has taken oath as the VP, nowhere does it say that you can raise the point of your caste affiliations to benefit the ruling party. So, the way he (Dhankhar) also handled the issue was not right,” Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP and prominent Jat leader, told reporters.
The RLD was previously an ally of the BJP but is currently part of the INDIA opposition bloc.
“As far as the Jat community is concerned, and it has been our rural culture as well…nobody understands and does humour better than us. There are so many sayings about us (regarding our humour), be it in Haryana or western UP. Nobody feels offended at all,” said Singh.
