Paris and Barcelona are two of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
The cities are famed for their iconic sights and cultural heritage, including Paris’s Eiffel Tower or a stroll down Barcelona’s Las Ramblas.
But two cities have been hailed as the South American’s answer to the European city break, making them an interesting holiday option for those willing to travel further afield.
It has even been claimed that the destinations trump Paris and Barcelona.
The first city, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, is located in the state of Guanajuato.
Its 16th century architecture is a major appeal, and its preservation has earned the city UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Tourists also flock here to enjoy the cobblestone streets, impressive churches, and historic mansions.
San Miguel de Allende is also a great option for those who enjoy art and culture, with festivals, galleries, and cultural events regularly being held in the city.
The second city is Antigua, Guatemala. Located in the heart of the country, the city is well known for is colonial architecture.
Like San Miguel de Allende, it has also earned the status of an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It isn’t just the buildings that have won plaudits. The surrounding landscape is just as beautiful, with volcanoes and rolling hills visible all around the city.
