The tiny but lively island that’s 29C in February | Travel News | Travel

With winter seemingly never ending in the UK, Brits across the country may be looking to escape the cold weather this month for some glorious sun.

Cape Verde is a popular country where many Brits flock to during the winter months thanks to its white sandy beaches, minimal rainfall, pleasant temperatures and a wealth of outdoor adventures.

Sal is the most popular island in the Cape Verde archipelago and is by far the most touristed island.

If you want to head to the beautiful African country in February and not constantly rub shoulders with fellow tourists then São Vicente, one of the smaller islands of Cape Verde, may just be the place for you.

February is considered the hottest month in Sao Vicente with temperatures often reaching 29C during the day, falling to a balmy 24C at night. The water reaches a modest 18C.

Measuring just 87 miles, it takes roughly just half an hour to travel from one side of the island to the other, but don’t let its small size fool you, as this island has a wealth of things to see and do.

São Vicente’s capital, Mindelo is known for its thriving cultural and music scene. Here, you will find a lively buzz of music throughout the pubs, restaurants and nightclubs.

Mindelo, the cultural hub of the island, hosts animated carnival celebrations throughout the year and is also the birthplace of famed Cabo Verdean singer Cesária Évora.

Mindelo’s old town, also known as the City Centre of Morada, was the site of the island’s first settlement in 1793. It is reminiscent of Portuguese and English influences and is home to picturesque squares and lively markets.

If you are looking for some glorious, scenic trails then you must try the hike on Vereda do Monte Trigo. The small peak gives you panoramic views across the city. The walk takes you up through the dense forest of Sao Vicente to several incredible rocky viewpoints.

No visit to this island would be complete without visiting the amazingly beautiful Laginha Beach, which boasts soft golden sands and crystal clear turquoise waters.

The calm and clear waters are perfect for swimming and cooling off under the Cape Verdean sun and is just a stone’s throw from Mindelo.
