The super cheap European rail trip – only 47 miles but 3 countries | Europe | Travel

A new train route has reopened in Europe, linking three countries along the way. This historic train line, originally constructed 150 years ago, now connects Italy to Croatia via Slovenia.

After being closed for over 30 years, the route has been reintroduced with eight stops along its scenic journey.

Passengers can embark on their adventure from Villa Opicina train station in Trieste as early as 7.50am.

The route begins with stops at Sežana, Divača, Pivka, and Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenia, before crossing into Croatia.

The final destinations include Šapjane, Opatija Matulji, and Rijeka. The entire journey takes approximately two hours and operates in both directions.

With tickets starting from just €8 (£7) for adults and €4 (£3.50) for children aged six to 12, this budget-friendly travel option offers an affordable way to explore multiple destinations.

Children under six can travel for free. Additionally, tickets between certain stations are available for as little as €1.20 (£1).

Onboard amenities include WiFi access, and passengers can also bring bicycles for an additional fee of €5 (£4.30). The service is scheduled to run until late September, with hopes of becoming a long-term transportation option for tourists and locals alike.

This new train route is not the only recent addition to European rail travel.

In March, a 15-hour night train journey was launched connecting Brussels and Prague for the first time.

Other upcoming routes include plans for train travel from Amsterdam to Berlin and Copenhagen, as well as a proposed 19-hour journey connecting Belgium to Slovakia.
