Kanguva Box Office Collection Day 9: The movie sees drastic fall, struggles to hit Rs 100 crores, Suriya may…

Siva’s Kanguva was touted to be one of the massive box office hits of 2024. Initially, the movie had a strong start, but the theories quickly crumbled due to negative reviews, leading to a significant decline in earnings. Reportedly, the movie is currently struggling to hit the Rs 100 crore mark.

The production company is facing losses

As reported by Sacnilk, the film’s earnings on Day 9, November 22, plummeted to a mere Rs 0.61 crore, marking a big 68% drop from Thursday’s Rs 1.9 crore. Despite its high production values, star-studded cast and extensive marketing campaign, the film failed to connect with audiences.

After an extended eight-week run, the film has accumulated just Rs 64.30 crore, falling far short of its Rs 300 crore budget. Studio Green, the production company behind this project, is reportedly facing significant losses. Reportedly, in an effort to reduce the damage, Suriya, the protagonist of the movie, is considering a pay cut or even returning part of his fee. Additionally, there are discussions about him taking on a lower-budget project for the production company to help recover some of the losses.

In its first week, the movie garnered Rs 96.66 crore globally. Although the movie was expected to gross Rs 400-500 crore in its lifetime, it may not even achieve the Rs 100 crore mark globally. Kanguva encountered fierce competition from Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran, which has been performing strongly at the box office.

Has Suriya’s next movie been shelved?

If the reports are to be believed, Suriya’s Bollywood debut project, Karna, has reportedly been shelved due to the financial concerns stemming from Kanguva’s underperformance. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Karna had been envisioned as a Rs 350 crore two-part epic.

Meanwhile, Suriya is preparing for his upcoming projects, including Karthik Subbaraj’s Suriya 44, alongside Pooja Hegde, as well as Suriya 45, with RJ Balaji.

About Kanguva

Originally announced in 2019, Kanguva was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When it was scheduled to be released in 2024, the date was shifted from October 10 to November 14 to avoid competition with Vettaiyan, featuring Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan.

Set in an imaginary world, Kanguva revolves around a police officer, who is on a mission to fight crime and discovers a stumbles upon an old betrayal. The movie features Suriya in double roles, alongside Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Natarajan Subramaniam, Kovai Sarala, Anandaraj, and K. S. Ravikumar in pivotal roles. Made on a budget of around Rs 300–350 crore, Kanguva is being touted as one of the most expensive Indian movies ever made.

It’s also known that Suriya’s brother, Karthi, has a cameo in Kanguva. This appearance is expected to lead to a sequel, which is an exciting reason to watch the film in theatres. In July 2024, Gnanavel Raja revealed that the sequel to Kanguva can be expected to be released in 2027.
