IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, the latest Netflix release directed by Anubhav Sinha, has quickly become the most talked-about show online. Based on the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, the six-part limited series showcases the terrifying week-long ordeal that began as a routine flight from Kathmandu to Delhi. Featuring a stellar cast including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur, the show is inspired by the book Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story.
While the series has received praise for its intense portrayal of the events, some viewers have expressed concern over some changes in the narrative. Adding to the discussion, a passenger who was on the flight has recently shared her personal account of the harrowing experience, bringing more attention to the series. The woman, who addressed herself as Mrs. Menon, spoke to director Anubhav Sinha, Vijay Varma, and flight captain Devi Sharan. The video was shared by Brut India on Instagram.
The hijack survivor recalls the horror that she experienced 25 years ago while she was returning from honeymoon with her husband. The lady shares, “I was sitting behind. I was 24 and had gone on my honeymoon. We were returning from Nepal.” Anubhav Sinha asks her, “How many times did you feel during those days that you’re close to death?” To this, she answers, she thought of death on the first and last days. A perplexed Anubhav and Vijay wondered why she thought of death on the last day as they were playing antakshari.
We would like to inform our entertainment news readers that the survivor clarified that Antakshari was going on during the 3-4th day of the hijack. She stated, “I asked one of the hijackers, whose name was Burger, is his name this because he loves burgers. It was that friendly (with the passengers). On the last day, he told the passengers to pray to whichever god we believe in, as they will be shooting every passenger one by one. My parents’ faces were coming in front of my eyes. I fell asleep after crying so much after those 8 days. When he called me, I thought it’s my number to be killed.”
The survivor tells the team of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack describes how she felt on the evening of December 31st when they were released. “That was the best sunset I’ve seen till now. I will never forget that sunset because of the freedom that we all got.”
