Myprotein range at Iceland – and some kept me full for hours
Everyone’s health goals are different and there are many foods on the market to help you achieve them.
With that in mind, if you are looking to increase your protein intake but don’t have time to cook, you might want to try out a ready meal.
Myprotein has a range of frozen meals available in Iceland and promises to be at least one of your five daily portions of vegetables, low in saturated fat and high in protein and fibre.
They also claim to have a variety of nutrients such as vitamin B6 and magnesium. And while this all sounds like it is ticking a number of boxes for different health goals, do they taste good?
I tried products from their line and one meal in particular kept me full for hours and I also enjoyed it.
Don’t miss… Slimming World frozen meal that you wouldn’t know was for weight loss
The Myprotein Indian Banquet meal from Iceland
Myprotein Indian Banquet – 500g, £4.00 – 47.5g of protein per pack
This curry was great. The tikka spices were light and fragrant with a nice gentle heat. And I thought the rice was good considering it had been microwaved.
You get a good amount of chicken pieces and curry sauce, though perhaps the chicken could have been seasoned a little separately, but with the moreish curry, it isn’t a dealbreaker.
I was worried about the gunpowder-spiced vegetables halfway through the cooking process as they were already quite soft. And they ended up very mushy which I think affected the flavour as I couldn’t taste the gunpowder spices.
This let it down a bit, but covered in that curry sauce, it was delicious, and I was so full I didn’t snack right through the evening – well, I did have a biscuit with my tea before bed, but you have to, right? It’s the law.
If you haven’t got time to cook and you want a protein-rich meal, I think this is pretty decent, and you get a good amount for £4. 8/10
The Chinese Banquet from Myprotein
Myprotein Chinese Banquet – 500g, £4.75 – 56.7g of protein per pack
This smelt so good. The curry sauce was delicious and you get a decent amount. Sweet and mildly spicy, it’s very moreish. The chicken was a little spongey, which let the whole dish down.
Special Fried Rice is good for microwave rice and tastes just like a takeaway with a good mix of egg, veg and meat. The salt and pepper noodles cooked well but lack the punchy flavour I was expecting after tasting the curry.
But I thought this was a high standard frozen ready meal and was flavourful and filling. 8/10
Myprotein Katsu meal from Iceland
Myprotein Katsu Chicken with Rice – 350g, £4 – 28.3g of protein per pack
When I saw it was just chicken breast pieces, I was kind of sad, this is not the Katsu I had envisioned, but if this forms part of your health goals, then this could be a good alternative for you.
It’s very wet and lacks the katsu flavour which is disappointing. There is a mild heat on the back of the tongue and you can taste a little of the fragrant spices and the coconut milk which is nice, but it lacks the punch because it is just watery.
It is packed with veg and I can see why this would be a healthy choice for certain diet goals, I think some people may enjoy this more than I did. 5/10
Myprotein Wellness Spanish Chicken – 400g, £4 – 25.8g of protein per pack
This had that taste of a microwave meal… the beans were chalky, the sauce lacked depth, and I found it a little sour.
The chicken was also very chewy and the whole thing was very mushy. 3/10
Spanish Chicken Myprotein meal from Iceland
Myprotein Wellness Hoisin Beef – 400g, £4 – 28.1g of protein per pack
The sauce is sweet and sticky, but it was a bit watery, and if it was thicker, the flavour would be more intense which the meal could greatly benefit from.
The beef was nice, if a little chewy, and there was plenty of it. I thought the vegetables retained a nice freshness that I enjoyed. This is a decent, convenient lunch. 6/10
Myprotein Salt & Pepper Meat Feast Noodles – 500g, £4.75 – 54.8g of protein per pack
Coming from Merseyside, we take salt and pepper anything very seriously. A good salt and pepper seasoning needs a full umami flavour, the salt and spice with the tiniest hint of sweetness to round it out into a taste explosion.
Unfortunetly, this does not fulfil this criteria and I personally found it very mushy and bland. There was a good volume of veg and meat, but when the flavour is lacking, it is hard finish.
Had the sauce and the noodles have been separated, you could have heated the noodles first and then added seasoning in a pan to almost dry them out, and then you would have had a better dish. 3/10
Hosin Beef Myprotein meal from Iceland
Myprotein Breakfast Loaded Wrap – 183g, £3.00 – 22.3g of protein
This was good, apart from the bacon pieces. The sausages were nice and herby, the egg had made it through the freezing and reheating process well.
I would have liked some more beans, but I perhaps understand why there isn’t, you can’t have it being too wet with the soft tortilla wrap, which was nice.
But the bacon pieces are inedible for me, however, they are easy enough to pick out and my husband said the bacon was fine, just microwaved, so perhaps that is just me.
With a bit of red sauce (or brown) this is a breakfast or lunch that will save you time and keep you full. 7/10
