The ’emergency pants’ rule that flight attendants always follow on holiday – and it’s more than you think

KNOWING how many items of clothing to pack for a holiday can be an absolute nightmare.

A lot of people like to plan ahead by laying out pre-prepared outfits for each day, which is a sensible idea.

But you can never really be sure exactly what you’re going to be doing on your trips, and how you’ll need to dress.

During some downtime on a recent long-haul flight, my colleagues and I discussed the right amount of underwear that people should be packing for their holidays.

We came to a consensus about the correct ratio of days to pants, which of course I’m more than happy to share with you today in this week’s blog for Sun Travel.

Firstly, you’re going to need emergency pants, no matter where it is you’re going.

You never know what could happen and you should always be prepared, especially if you’re going to an exotic location where the food might not be what your stomach is used to handling.

It’s not like you’re definitely going to need them, but there’s always a chance, and it’s best to be prepared instead of leaving yourself without enough underwear for the rest of your trip.

So we would always advise taking at least one, if not two extra pairs in case of emergencies.

However, tummy troubles aren’t the only thing you need to take into consideration when you’re packing your case.

If you’re going to a hot country, or if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking or being active, you need to bring more pants than the number of days you’re away for.

This is just common sense, and probably not enough people think about it before they go away.

Travel Advice- From Checking In to Boarding

For instance, if you spend your morning/early afternoon out and about exploring the area in which you’re staying, or doing some sightseeing, you’re likely going to need a change for the evening.

Typically, several days on holiday usually involve a morning activity, before a return to the resort/hotel for a relax in the afternoon and then getting washed up and ready for an evening out.

I’d never wear the same pair of underwear for the morning and the evening, nor do I think would most people, especially if they’re somewhere hot and sweaty.

For this reason, we would recommend packing 25 per cent more pairs than you would normally wear.

That way you have enough pairs to keep you fresh in both the morning and the night.

Add in the two emergency pairs on top of these extras and you’re absolutely ready for any holiday.

There’s every chance you don’t need all of the pants you take, but that’s not the point.

They’re pretty small compared to your other clothes, so don’t really take up much room.

And if you do need them, you’ll be really pleased that you were quite so prepared.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry – especially when it comes to your underwear.
