The UK is filled with lots of cities that offer great options for days out or even weekend stays. Among the most popular places are Edinburgh in Scotland, Manchester in the northwest, and of course the capital London.

But Brits may be surprised to know that the country’s second-smallest city is also a popular locations for those looking to do some shopping, relax at a restaurant, or enjoy some evening drinks.

Ely in Cambridgeshire has a population of just 15,000 people. The cathedral town is easy to get to from London and offers a more traditional feel to other places in the UK.

You can get the train to Ely from Kings Cross and be there in about an hour.

It is also accessible from A10 and A14. Among the city’s best sights is the stunning cathedral. Visitors can also enjoy some river cruising, antiquing, or shopping in the city centre.

The cathedral’s historical significance makes it one of the go-to sites. Its West Tower – known as ‘Ship of the Fens’ rises above the trees nearby.

Visitors are also urged to visit the Stained Glass Museum, which is the only one of its kind in the UK.

Oliver Cromwell’s old house also attracts visitors as it is the only one of his homes left standing except for Hampton Court.

Cromwell spent 1636 to 1646 living here with his wife, Elizabeth, and their children.

At the Ely Museum, visitors can take in the strange and fascinating displays. There you can find Arrowheads, flint picks and antler hammers used to hunt animals such as mammoths and wolves.

For shoppers, Ely Market is a great place to find an array of small stalls. The town also boasts great bakeries.

Ben’s Yard is another interesting place, filled with small shops and an Ely Cahtedral-themed play park for kids.
