The beautiful little town that’s home to one of England’s prettiest high streets | Travel News | Travel

British market towns have a particular charm. Located the length and breadth of the UK, they often boast pretty cobbled streets and historic buildings with cute and quirky shops and eateries along their main stretches.

But the stunning little town of Cranbrook in Kent really takes having a quaint high street to the next level – as in full view is a gloriously whimsical working windmill.

So fetching is this little Kent gem that it’s been dubbed one of the best places to live in its region by lifestyle blogger Muddy Stilettos which described the town as a “rural gem”.

She said: “Think weather boarded houses, a windmill and a line of shops disappearing towards a pretty church.  Here you are literally surrounded by beautiful Kent countryside and quintessential Kentish villages,” she added.

And that’s not all – as well as being totally gorgeous Cranbrook also boasts a range of cosmopolitan independent shops and restaurants.

Foodies won’t be disappointed at what’s on offer including authentic Greek taverna Kypseli and The Cloudberry Restaurant with its tasty seasonal menu.

Then there’s the annual Cranbrook Apple Fayre, usually held in October, which is to celebrate Kent’s apple orchards.

The big – and free – day takes place in the main High Street which is closed to make way for music, market stalls, street food, cider and other entertainment

Although if you do fancy upping sticks and moving to Cranbrook then it’ll cost you due in part to its rural location that’s just 40 miles of the UK capital.

According to Rightmove, properties in Cranbrook had an overall average price of £633,748 over the last year. This compares to a UK average of £264,500.

Tourism site Visit Tunbridge Wells explains more about the location’s history – and its most famous landmark. It said: “Arguably, one of the greatest attractions is the windmill.

“The Union Mill is probably Cranbrook’s most famous landmark because it is one of the most superior smock mills in the UK and amazingly, still in working order.

“Open days offer an outstanding insight into the area’s heritage as well as a magnificent view from the sails over the fields and parish.”
