According to the experts at Wren Kitchens, it is important to clean your BBQ “to prevent long-term damage and ensure optimal performance for the next grilling season.” Frequent summer use often leads to a significant buildup of grease, food particles, and carbon residue, creating potential fire hazards if left unchecked. 

Accumulated grime can also attract pests and promote the growth of mould or bacteria, posing unwanted health risks. But by thoroughly cleaning your BBQ at the end of summer, you can eliminate residues and protect against rust and decay.

Wren Kitchens has shared several affordable tips to extend the life of your BBQ and preserve the quality of your cooking. 

One of which is super easy and affordable and can be achieved by using just one everyday kitchen staple.

White onions aren’t just good for frying up with burgers and hot dogs, they are also a handy natural substitute for harsh chemical cleaners. 

Costing on average around 18p per onion, this creative way of cleaning is incredibly cheap too.  The experts say “Heat the grill to a high temperature, then cut an onion in half and use a fork or tongs to rub the cut side over the hot grates.

“The natural enzymes and acids in the onion help to loosen and burn off food residues and grease. The high heat also assists in this process, making it easier to scrub away the loosened debris.”

It’s not just onions that can be used to make BBQs beautiful again. The experts say that steam is an effective tool against greasy grills. 

They added “After preheating the grill to a high temperature, place a large ball of aluminium foil directly on the grates. Close the lid and let the grill heat up for about 15 minutes. The high heat combined with the aluminium foil creates a steam effect that helps to loosen grime and burnt-on food. Afterwards, use a grill brush or scraper to remove the softened residue.”

This method is highly effective for removing stubborn build-up without the need for chemical cleaners.

For those who prefer an eco-friendly approach, natural citrus-based cleaners offer a powerful and pleasant-smelling alternative to commercial grill cleaners.

The experts said: “You can make a citrus cleaner by mixing lemon or orange juice with water and a small amount of vinegar. Apply this mixture to the grates and other interior surfaces, then let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. The natural acids in citrus help to break down grease and food residues. Scrub with a brush or sponge, then rinse thoroughly.

“This method not only cleans effectively but also leaves a fresh scent, making it a great option for those sensitive to chemical cleaners.”
