The Scotland great – named CBE in the King’s Birthday honours list – was on ITV pundit duty for the opening game of Euro 2024 – alongside Ian Wright and Roy Keane.

And he took aim at Callum McGregor in particular after a pre-match party full of promise capitulated

The Celtic skipper might not have the European honours that Souness does – but he’s lifted plenty of Scottish silverware.

And former Rangers boss Souness irked the green side of Glasgow when picking out the ‘Celtic captain’ – and referring directly to his club role, during his criticism on an off-night for all the Scotland players.

He slammed McGregor for being wrong-footed by Jamal Musiala – later voted player of the match – at the second goal for Germany.

Souness raged: “Gundogan, again, great turn, he slips Havertz in, back to Musiala, wrong foots the Celtic captain yet again, that’s two in the same move.

“He tries to nick it here, Callum McGregor, and he gets back in, he tries to nick it again – just stay goalside and stop the effort on your goal.”

It was a sobering night for all of a Scotland persuasion – and even Roy Keane savaged Andy Robertson’s post-match interview.

And all the pre-match promise came crashing down within ten minutes when Florian Wirtz fired past Angus Gunn.

Musiala danced and drove the second past Angus Gunn before Ryan Porteous was red-carded and Kai Havertz converted the resultant penalty.

Sub Niclas Fullkrug smashed in a fourth before Scotland finally responded – through Scott McKenna and Antonio Rudiger’s combination of headers.

And Emre Can restored the four-goal margin with the last kick of the game.

Souness smarted over the penalty incident – which Willie Miller admitted made him feel sick on BBC Sportsound – and summarised: “That incident I think tells you all you need to know on that game of football tonight.

“You have Porteous – a Watford centre-half committing a terrible foul on Gundogan who plays for Barcelona.”

Despite the crude challenge Gundogan was able to continue after Porteous walked.
