The film GOAT (Greatest of All Time), starring Thalapathy Vijay and directed by Venkat Prabhu, was released in theatres on September 5, 2024. It has received a mixed response since its release. The film, which features Vijay in dual roles as Gandhi, a Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS) member, and his son Jeevan, had a strong start but has faced challenges on its second day. The movie, which also stars Sneha, Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer, Mohan, and Jayaram has been billed as Vijay’s second-to-last film before he fully transitions into politics.
Despite a strong opening day with earnings of over ₹126 crore worldwide, the film’s box office performance took a hit on its second day. Early reports indicate a significant drop in earnings compared to the debut. On its opening day, Thalapathy Vijay’s GOAT grossed Rs 44 crore in India, with the Tamil version contributing Rs 39.15 crore and the Telugu and Hindi versions adding Rs 3 crore and Rs 1.85 crore, respectively. However, as reported by entertainment news portal Sacnilk, as of Friday evening (6 pm), the film’s occupancy rate in the Tamil market had decreased to 50.57%, with earnings of just Rs 13.89 crore.
The decline in occupancy and earnings is attributed to mixed reviews and the impact of a weekday. The Tamil version of the film saw varied occupancy rates across major cities, with Chennai showing a high occupancy of 82%, while other cities like Mumbai (16.5%) and Bengaluru (24%) had lower rates. The film’s weekday release and critical reception are believed to have contributed to the drop in collections.
GOAT had set high expectations, partly because it is being promoted as Vijay’s penultimate film before his full-time political career. This has added pressure on the film to perform well, especially given its massive budget of Rs 400 crore. It would be interesting to see if the film will recover and perform better over the weekend.

Meanwhile, at the end of the film, director Venkat Prabhu has teased the audience with a sequel called GOAT vs. OG. In the movie, Vijay is seen passing on the baton to actor Sivakarthikeyan. However, it is not confirmed if the sequel is on cards, as the Bigil star will be quitting movies after his last film with director H. Vinoth.
