When it comes food waste it is something that we are all trying to avoid doing in the UK.
As the food we buy from supermarkets often has a sell-by date that doesn’t last long, no wonder we are looking for new ways to preserve our shopping items for longer.
Especially as many of us are feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis in the UK. However, supermarket giant Tesco has come to the rescue.
They have shared a warning to anyone who buys avocados and how to store them if you don’t plan on using them anytime soon.
It is estimated that 4.7 million tonnes (yes, tonnes) of food is thrown away each year, this is according to WRAP.
We are all probably guilty of this and sometimes it can be hard not to do. But taking small steps can help us cut back on food waste.
While many of us love our avocado on toast for breakfast or adding to a light salad, there isn’t much time to use the fruit between waiting for it to ripen and then for it to go brown and mushy.
It turns out you can freeze avocados with the advice being shared on Tesco’s website.
Tesco said in a bid to stop food going to waste if you have too many avocados ripening at once, freeze them a “peak condition”.
All you have to do is peel and freeze the fruit in chunks. Then you add the avocado chunks to the blender to make a smoothie or defrost them and make guacamole.
The supermarket also shared you can also freeze eggs, bananas, potatoes and yoghurt. And it turns out that it isn’t just food that you can freeze.
Yes, we are pretty surprised too that you can freeze Merlot but anything so we don’t have to throw the item away.
Courtney Pallett, a campaigns manager at Tesco said: “Your freezer is your friend when it comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing food away. Most of the foods that often end up in the bin such as avocados can be saved by freezing them to use later.”
