And the travel experts at Hotels.com have put together a handy guide to the best places to stay, making it easy for travellers to choose.

The team created a 2024 wrap-up, listing the most popular hotels, destinations and amenities searched for by Brits across last year.

And if you plan to travel with a pooch, one Edinburgh hotel has come out on top for being dog friendly.

The Balmoral, on the capital’s Princes Street, came top in the wrap for pet-friendly spots – but it will set you back £50 a night for each dog to stay over.

The iconic hotel stands at the end of the famous thoroughfare, just beside Waverley Station, which makes it ideal for travellers.

And it has a concierge service which meets guests on the platforms and takes them to the reception.

As well as being great for dog-owners, it has a luxury spa where people can be pampered with hot stone massages, body wraps or manicures.

Meanwhile, Number One, one of three restaurants, serves fine dining level food and recently made it onto an exclusive list of the world’s top eateries.

Those who have stayed at The Balmoral have great things to say about the hotel too.

One wrote: “A very central location, the concierge staff were incredibly helpful. We felt pampered the whole trip!”

And another said: “This is an old, elegant hotel that has been modernised to a high level of comfort. It is well located on Princes Street near Waverley train station.

“The service was outstanding, from Kelly at check in to Andrew and the entire concierge team.

“The spa was also excellent. I was dealing with multiple unexpected complications and wanted a hotel where I could confidently get some help while relaxing a bit. The Balmoral was perfect.”

Edinburgh in general was highlighted as a top UK location coming third in the most searched-for places to stay.

Some of the most popular hotels were the Virgin Hotel, YOTEL, W and Village Hotel.
