Strawberries last ‘much longer’ with simple method as common cleaning product dispelled

Finding ways to save money and reduce food waste can be surprisingly simple with a few clever tricks.

A game-changing tip for keeping strawberries fresh longer has made the rounds online, as one forum user also chimed in with their top no-go most people are usually unaware of.

The r/Frugal subreddit is a popular space for sharing money-saving tips and minimising food waste.

One Reddit user unveiled a valuable piece of advice after they inquired about effective strategies to prevent strawberries from moulding quickly.

One commenter suggested an effective method for extending the freshness of strawberries that required no cleaning products and helped them last “much longer”.

To follow their method, you simply need to quickly swish the berries in water for under a minute, discard the dirty water, and then spread the strawberries in a single layer to dry.

Once they are fully dry, store them in a newly cleaned container. “You need to wash fruit as soon as you get it home,” revealed the most popular reply.

“I have a big bowl that I fill with cool water, add in some distilled white vinegar, dump the strawberries in, and let them soak while I put the groceries away (usually less than five minutes).”

Other Redditors commented on their preferred tips and tricks to keep this noble fruit mould-free for longer.

One person suggested ditching the vinegar: “If the strawberries have any cuts or bruises, soaking those in vinegar makes them taste like vinegar.

“I recommend using citric acid instead (buy food grade citric acid and dilute the powder in water) if you do this a lot.

“It doesn’t affect the taste of the strawberries for the most part, and if it does, it just gets a little extra tart.”

“All berries do well in a glass jar,” explained one. “I’ve had strawberries last a couple weeks.”
