Springbok Manie Libbok was taken to hospital immediately after he was stretchered off the field during the Stormers’ Champions Cup clash against Toulon on Saturday.
The Stormers slumped to yet another defeat, this time at the hands of the European giants in their Investec Champions Cup opener at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The final score was 24-14 in favour of Toulon.
But the Stormers had lost more than just the game in PE. As it stands, the Cape side is counting the cost of the horrid injuries a couple of their players picked up against Toulon, the biggest and most worrying being that of Manie Libbok.
The Springbok flyhalf as well as flanker Feke Morabe both suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital, while utility forward Ben-Jason Dixon’s failed HIA casts doubt on his availability against Harlequins next Saturday.
CONFIRMED: LIBBOK IN BAD SHAPE AFTER HEAD KNOCK
Commenting on Libbok’s injury specifically, Dobson painted a dark picture with regard to the severity of the Springbok’s head knock.
“Manie is very bad – he’s gone to hospital, normal concussion you don’t go straight to hospital.”
THE STORMERS HAVE A SPRINGBOK PROBLEM
Those concerns add to an already lengthy injury list that includes four Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks.
“For us, and some might say it is an excuse, but not through substitutions or selections, but to play that game without Springbok players Deon [Fourie], Evan [Roos], Keke [Morabe], BJ [Dixon], Frans [Malherbe], Kitsie [Steven Kitshoff], Damian [Willemse], Sacha [Feinberg-Mnogemzulu], Manie [Libbok] – it’s not insignificant.
