Naseeruddin Shah Recalls IC 814 Hijack Incident: ‘Terribly Concerned’
Naseeruddin Shah recently recalled the haunting memories of the IC 814 hijack, revealing how deeply disturbed he was by the 1999 incident. Shah expressed his fear that the hijack could provoke a new wave of Islamophobia, describing himself as ‘terribly concerned’ and noting that the event caused him prolonged unease. His comments come amid controversy surrounding the recently released show IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The web series has faced backlash for using ‘Hindu’ codenames for the hijackers, leading to significant criticism. In response, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting intervened by summoning the OTT platform’s content head. Following a meeting on September 3, the platform pledged to conduct a content review and subsequently updated the opening disclaimer to include both the real names and codenames of the hijackers. The series features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, and others.
