A patron recently tipped a waiter R26 after spending R824 at a South African restaurant.
WAITER RECEIVES R26 TIP
Social media user @lush_beauty1 took to X on Wednesday, 13 March to share that a South African waiter was tipped R26 on a bill of R824.
The February bill also shows that the patron paid R850 after tipping the waiter R26 on the R824 meal.
Social media users took to X this week to defend the unknown customer by stating that R26 is what he could tip at the time.
South Africans feel that the employer is responsible for the waiter’s income, because waiters are employed to serve the clients at the employer’s cost.
While others feels that tipping shouldn’t be less than 10% based on the service rendered, because some waiters don’t receive income.
Another South African stated that waiters shouldn’t have any expectations after doing their job and R26 can still buy a loaf of bread.

SOUTH AFRICANS RESPOND TO R824 BILL
@bhutiwakhona: “I always tip cash. Many employers are evil in the restaurant industry. Waiters always appreciate cash tips. When you return, they give you the best service and even extra portions and drinks.”
@Mrs_CallMeK: “Y’all act like waiters aren’t doing what they’re employed to do when serving customers.”
@PebblesNeo: “I always give 10% or more, like always.”
@RELEH_LEGODI: “I am unemployed. And any little money I get I go to the restaurant. So, am expected to tip u 10% who’s employed? Doesn’t work like that. You can’t force us to go to fast food restaurants when we don’t feel like it. As long as you have money to pay for my food, then the rest is a courtesy.”
@LihleGamaB: “It’s all about affordability some people tip 5%, others 10%, others 20%, others don’t tip at all … appreciate and move.”
@MrFord_10037: “The problem is people thinking they’re entitled to a certain percentage with tipping. It’s called a gratuity for a reason.”
@tj_simende: “He or she ate and paid the bill. Nothing wrong here. It’s up to them to tip or not depending on the quality of service. Also remember you don’t know how long they saved up that R850 so that they can just go and have a meal at the restaurant. Not everyone has money.”
@nonigatlin: “I think waiters must just stop this entitlement. It’s making customers not to return. You give bad attitude to customer after seing a small tip (R20) is a good tip. The shop is expensive, you feel you deserve R80. Waiters are chasing customers into take aways.”
