Canada has emerged as the third-largest market for South African grape exports. The industry is also setting its sights on expanding further into the lucrative US market.
This has been bolstered by South Africa’s high-quality produce that adheres to the US’ stringent phytosanitary standards, writes Fruitnet.
The first shipments of the 2024 season have already reached Canadian shores, with exports to the US set to begin in week 51.
Local growers are optimistic about continued expansion in both markets.
“We are pleased with what we have achieved so far,” said Alwyn Dippenaar, CEO of Dippenaar Choice Fruit in the Orange River region.
“Last year, we shipped 1.2 million more cartons than the previous year, and our 2024 sales were 7% higher than in 2022.”
Acquiring a taste for South African varieties
Former South African Table Grape Industry chair and Hex River grower, Anton Viljoen, said that expanding sales into the US not only opens new opportunities but also eases pressure on the oversaturated European market.
Pivotal to South Africa’s success lies in its investment in innovative grape varieties. Many of these have become popular in the US and are familiar to American consumers.
These varieties include Sweet Globe, Sweet Celebration and Autumncrisp.
South African growers also benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which grants them tariff-free access to the US market.
