Did you know that another actress was originally considered for a crucial role opposite Mohnish Bahl before Tabu was finally cast?
Hum Saath Saath Hai is one of the most iconic films from the 90s, a timeless family drama that continues to remain fresh in the minds of its audience. From its compelling storyline and stellar cast to its unforgettable music, the film left a lasting impact on the film industry. However, did you know that another actress was originally considered for a crucial role opposite Mohnish Bahl before Tabu was finally cast?
Sooraj Barjatya, the director of Hum Saath Saath Hai, faced several challenges when it came to casting the perfect actress for the role of Salman Khan’s sister-in-law. The role was significant in the storyline, and the director had to choose someone who could bring the right depth to the character.
Interestingly, Madhuri Dixit, who had earlier worked with Sooraj Barjatya in Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), expressed interest in taking on the role. In a conversation with Radio Nasha, Sooraj Barjatya revealed that several top actresses were considered for the part.
Madhuri Dixit reached out to Sooraj Barjatya, showing her eagerness to be a part of the film. In the conversation, Sooraj Barjatya recalled, “I told her, ‘Madhuri, I am making a male-dominated picture, and if I cast you opposite Salman, then it is a very small role for you. And if I cast you opposite Mohnish Bahl, then you will be playing bhabhi to Salman Khan.’ She is such a lovely lady. She said, ‘It doesn’t matter, it is a joy to work together.’ But then I said I would not be comfortable.” Despite her willingness, he eventually decided against casting her for this particular role, as it didn’t align with her stature at the time.
The role was eventually finalized for Tabu, who played Mohnish Bahl’s love interest and Salman Khan’s sister-in-law. Sonali Bendre was cast as Salman Khan’s romantic lead.
Hum Saath Saath Hai, a family-oriented drama, became the highest-grossing film of the year and one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade. With a star-studded cast that included Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Neelam, and Alok Nath, Hum Saath Saath Hai remains a cherished classic of the 90s.
