SonyLIV’s latest crime thriller Manvat Murders is capturing viewers’ attention with its gripping storyline and stellar performances, especially that of Sonali Kulkarni. Directed by Ashish Bende and written by Girish Joshi, the series is an intense exploration of crime, emotions, and moral dilemmas, earning high praise from critics and audiences alike.
Sonali Kulkarni delves into fierce and complex character in Manvat Murders: “Her inability to bear a child has left her feeling rejected and hollow”
The series centres around the unsettling world of crime in a small Indian town, with Sonali Kulkarni portraying the complex character of Rukmini. Sonali describes her role as one of the most challenging of her career, taking her into uncharted territory. Sonali shared, “Rukmini was a surprise offer to me. I had always anticipated someone would create a series around this topic, though I was unfamiliar with the case details. It was a sensational news story that I remember, but I didn’t know I’d end up playing one of the key culprits. It was huge.”
Sonali’s preparation for the role included reading the script and engaging with the team to unravel Rukmini’s layers. “This character isn’t just about being a criminal; there are so many emotions, contradictions, and deep-seated grief driving her actions. Rukmini is fierce, like a tigress, but she is also wounded. Her inability to bear a child has left her feeling rejected and hollow, pushing her toward the heinous acts she plans. Her pain is profound, and portraying that with authenticity was a big responsibility,” Sonali added
The physical transformation to embody Rukmini’s look added another dimension to Sonali’s portrayal. Sonali shared, “I was very curious to see Rukmini’s appearance because she belongs to a community known for their tattoos. Working with the styling, hair and makeup team and our costume designer Neelima Kothare, we ensured the tattoos on my neck were authentic. There was no makeup as such but applying the tattoos took a significant amount of time. I was also wearing the real Nauvari saree, not the stitched readymade one.”
Despite the hardships, Sonali’s commitment to the role brought Rukmini’s fierce yet vulnerable persona to life on screen. “It was a difficult space to inhabit,” she said. “In reality, as a happy mother with a supportive partner, it was challenging to understand Rukmini’s deep despair and the sorrow of being unable to have children. It required digging deep into a place of emptiness and loss.”
