Snow and freezing rain forecast for Scotland with ‘big change’ due in days

HEAVY snow and freezing rain is set to blast Scotland in just days with a “big change” on the way.

A biting chill has moved in across the country this week as temperatures plummet due to an easterly air flow.

The Met Office weather map shows Scotland hit by snow next week

The mercury has dropped to a freezing -4C in areas this week.

But Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill revealed that there is going to be a “change” in the weather on Friday.

There will be a switch in the weather system which will start pushing in from the southwest, rather than the east.

This is set to bring in some unsettled conditions, with a risk of snow and freezing rain.

And Scots will feel the change in the weather from Friday and into next week, with snow likely to fall on Monday, February 17.

The meteorologist added: “As we go into Friday we do have a system coming from the southwest, the start of that change to something a bit more unsettled or low pressure related.

“There is the risk through this weekend and into the beginning of next week of various spells of freezing rain mixed in with some sleet and snow at times as well.

“That’s because we have various swathes of wet weather coming in from the southwest and there’s still going to be some uncertainty as to how far northeast they get and how far any colder air ducking underneath it comes in from the east.

“Bit of uncertainty about those boundaries. So exactly where we see the rain pushing through and where we see some sleet, some snow, some freezing rain is a little bit uncertain still.”

Alex added that Scotland and northern England are most likely to see snow and freezing rain, which may cause some issues in the areas.

And the Met Office might need to issue some weather warnings nearer the time.

He added: “Across parts of Scotland down the eastern side of Northern England, this is where we have the greatest risk of seeing some snow and some freezing rain.

“In terms of snowfall amounts, this could cause a little bit of disruption, doesn’t look especially problematic at the moment but any snow, any freezing rain can cause some issues.

“So we may need to issue some warnings for these nearer the time.”

Temperatures are set to rise on Tuesday, with the UK sandwiched between low pressure to the west and high pressure in the east.

However, there is still some uncertainty on how quickly the weather systems will transition and how quickly it will spread across the country.
