Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her fellow crew members have revealed how they will mark Thanksgiving whilst aboard the International Space Station.
The team will partake in a specially prepared feast featuring smoked turkey, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, and spiced apples. This celebration upholds a long-standing custom of astronauts observing the holiday whilst in orbit, strengthening bonds and preserving traditions despite being away from Earth.
Nasa released footage on Wednesday showing Williams and her colleagues discussing their holiday arrangements, including their scheduled activities and planned meals.

Space Station Astronauts Deliver a Thanksgiving Message for 2024

The footage captures Williams delivering a heartfelt message: “Greetings from the International Space Station. Our crew wants to say a happy Thanksgiving to our friends, family, and everyone down on Earth supporting us.” Her colleague detailed their special space-appropriate menu, comprising smoked turkey, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, apples, and spice. “It’s going to be delicious,” they remarked cheerfully.
Since June 5, Sunita and Barry “Butch” Wilmore have been stationed in space. Their assignment, initially planned for eight days, has been lengthened until February 2024. Despite being separated from their families, the crew maintains their holiday enthusiasm.
The Thanksgiving period provides an opportunity for reflection and appreciation of loved ones. For space crews, who endure extended periods away from their families, this celebration helps them bond with their orbital companions whilst maintaining important traditions.
Space-based Thanksgiving celebrations date back to 1973 when Skylab 4 astronauts Gerald Carr, Edward Gibson, and William Pogue pioneered the tradition. Subsequently, numerous space crews have commemorated Thanksgiving, enjoying meals specifically designed for consumption in space.
