You may be wondering if you should tuck your eggs away in the fridge or if they’re better off left out. Well, it turns out it depends on what region you’re located in. Quite curious, taking to social media, one individual wanted to know if they should keep their eggs in the fridge as Google searches kept yielding different results.
Heading to advice platform Reddit, they asked a question: “So googling this I’ve gotten different results. They apparently last longer in the fridge (unsurprising) so is this best? Some people say don’t keep them in the fridge and some say keep them in the fridge. I don’t bake if that makes much difference.”
People chimed in with some answers.
One person said: “Depends where you live… I live in a hot humid country so keep mine in the fridge… when I lived in a draughty cottage in the UK I didn’t. If it’s warm enough to melt butter in your kitchen… keep them in a fridge.”
Responding to this, someone explained why UK eggs could be stored outside of the fridge compared to US eggs.
They wrote: “The difference is, UK eggs are unwashed. The natural coating of an egg protects it from bacteria getting into the egg.

Someone else said: “If you live in the US, then yes, refrigerate. If you live in Europe, then no you don’t have to.
“The two regions have different standards for how commercially distributed eggs are meant to be treated: pasteurized vs. not. Pasteurizing eggs strips them of a natural protective coating that when intact makes refrigeration unnecessary.
“So pasteurized eggs (US eggs) need to be refrigerated, where as unpasteurized eggs (Europe) do not.”
