Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil ended his hunger strike on the fifth day in Antarwali Sarati on Wednesday, citing health concerns and pressure from his supporters.

During his announcement, Jarange emphasised his commitment to the cause, stating, “I am ready to continue the hunger strike without any medical intervention or saline, prepared to go to any lengths for our cause. But lying on a saline drip feels like a hollow protest. It is better to prepare for the struggle ahead than to pretend to fast.”

Jarange voiced his frustration with the government, accusing them of fearing the power of hunger strikes and the potential threat to their authority. He expressed his disappointment that his supporters had to intervene. “The government is afraid of our strength and what we can do if we unite. My people insisted on giving me a saline drip. It’s useless to lie there hooked up to it. Instead, I should prepare for the elections and the larger battle ahead.”

Over the past days, Jarange’s health had visibly deteriorated, prompting his fellow villagers and supporters to urge him to end the hunger strike and receive medical treatment. Despite his initial resistance, Jarange acknowledged the insistence of his community and their genuine concern for his well-being.

Jarange’s speech also highlighted his strategic shift towards electoral preparation. He indicated that instead of lying incapacitated, it was more productive to start gearing up for the next election. He underlined the need to mobilise efforts towards identifying and supporting candidates who would fight for their cause, as well as campaigning against those who opposed them.

Jarange targeted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, accusing them of betrayal and dishonesty. He criticised Devendra Fadnavis, expressing doubts about the party’s commitment to the Maratha community. Jarange

Jarange’s medical reports indicated critically low sugar and blood pressure levels. The doctor monitoring his condition stated that Jarange urgently needed medical attention, without which, there was a significant risk of him losing consciousness.
