SCOTS tots as young as four are battling Type 2 diabetes — amid a childhood obesity crisis.
Around 700 kids have been diagnosed with the disease, linked to excess fat.
Stats show cases have soared by two thirds since 2003, while a third of youngsters are overweight or obese by 14.
Experts warn urgent action is needed.
Jennifer Forsyth, of Obesity Action Scotland, said: “At least 60,000 more people have Type 2 diabetes than ten years ago. Obesity and being overweight are strongly linked to it.
“And the risks start young.
“Tens of thousands more may face a diabetes diagnosis if preventative action is not taken.”
Figures for 2022 show up to 20 kids under five, almost 100 ten to 14 year olds and more than 600 teens aged 15 to 19 had Type 2.
It can be caused by fat in the liver and pancreas.
John Kinnear, of Diabetes Scotland, said: “We need to create a food environment that helps us all live more healthily.”
