Photographers venturing to South Uist should aim for the ancient An Carra Standing Stone, a relic from the Neolithic age.

The monument adds to the island’s rich history and provides spectacular views of crystal-clear waters and powdery white beaches.

VisitScotland’s expert tips for capturing a sunset:

  1. Consider the time of year:
    • In Edinburgh, the sun sets from 3:40pm in winter, while in summer sunsets are likely to happen around 10pm.
    • Remember, this will vary on how far north you are travelling – check the local sunset times based on your location.
  2. Anticipate the sun’s position:
    • Look west, that’s where the sun sets. This can change where might want to be situated to get a great shot.
  3. Don’t rush off:
    • Don’t leave immediately after the sun has dipped below the horizon, sometimes the best colours can appear if you wait.
    • Keep an eye out for clouds high up in the atmosphere as the sun can reflect off these and create a palette of orange, red and purple.
  4. Check the weather:
    • Make sure to prepare for the Scottish weather. This will have a big impact on what you can see.
    • Plan accordingly by wearing warm, waterproof clothing. The temperatures can get very chilly after sunset, you might want to bring a hot drink along with you too.
  5. Stay safe:
    • It will get dark quickly after the sun sets. Pack a torch to safely navigate your surroundings.
  6. Never look directly at the sun:
    • Avoid staring directly at the sun with the naked eye, this can cause serious damage to your eyes.
