Due to the prevailing cold wave conditions, followed by dense fog and low temperatures in northern India, several cities, union territories, and states have declared school holidays to alleviate the impact of the harsh weather on students.
Punjab, Haryana, and multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have extended school holidays due to the persistent cold wave and foggy conditions prevailing in the northern states.
Chandigarh has issued a directive to all government, government-aided, and recognized private schools, instructing them to suspend in-person classes for students up to Class 8 until January 20, 2024. “In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and to avoid the exposure of children to this extreme cold weather; there will be no classes in physical mode up to Class VIII in any Government, Government-Aided and Recognised Private Schools of UT Chandigarh till the 20th of January 2024. In Punjab, classes up to 5th in all schools will remain suspended till January 20 due to cold wave conditions. “All primary schools in the state, including government, government-aided and private schools, will remain closed from January 15 to January 21, 2024, due to the severe cold wave conditions in the state, ensuring the health and safety of students,” writes Harjot Singh Bains on X (formerly Twitter).
While, all middle, high, and senior secondary schools in the state (government, aided, recognized, and private) will operate regularly from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. For all schools with a double shift, the timing will be from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. No double-shift school will be open after 4:00 PM. These orders will be in effect immediately and will continue until January 21, 2024.
In the neighboring state, the Haryana government has also extended the winter break for students up to Class 3 till January 18.

Likewise, in Uttar Pradesh, several districts have extended their winter holidays in response to the ongoing cold wave conditions. In Noida and Greater Noida, the district administration has decided to suspend all educational activities for students from Nursery to Class 8, with the suspension in effect until January 16, 2024. Similarly, in Lucknow, the District Magistrate has issued a circular mandating the closure of schools up to Class 8 due to the prevailing cold weather conditions.
