Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s OTT directorial debut, Heeramandi, has won the hearts of many. The show features a star-studded cast, including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, and Sharmin Segal. While every character in Bhansali’s series has captivated audiences, Sanjeeda Shaikh as Waheeda has particularly resonated with viewers.
In a recent interview, Sanjeeda recalled shooting a mujra scene on the first day of her period and how the makers were understanding enough to help her through those days. She also said that the mujra scene in the show was soo interesting that it made her forget the period pain. Speaking to Hauterrfly, Sanjeeda said, “I have been very vocal about my periods on sets. I am somebody who would go to the director and say I am chumming.” She added, “When my mother got her periods, the first person she told was her Abba. So, for me, it’s not a big deal to tell a director, producer, or my co-stars. I just thought it was very normal.”
“I shot my mujra for Heeramandi on the first day of my period. For me, it gets really uncomfortable on the second day. It gets difficult. But I was so engrossed in whatever I was doing that I would forget all the pain. They would also pack me up early. I told them there was a little discomfort and if I rested a bit, I would feel better the next day. So, this is the thing—you need to express yourself. If you don’t let them know, they will simply think you are very cranky. It is better to tell them why you are cranky in the first place. I also want to tell other women if you are not comfortable with the thought, get comfortable with it,” Sanjeeda said.
Sanjeeda’s character in SLB’s show is one of the most complex. Waheeda, who is Mallika Jaan’s (played by Manisha Koirala) sister, has been deceived not just by fate but by her own blood too. Sanjeeda is a well-known face in the TV industry. Over her two-decade-long career, Sanjeeda has played various roles.
