Rajiv Gandhi wanted to end reservation, Rahul wants to do the same now, alleges Modi at Deoghar rally

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday alleged that late PM Rajiv Gandhi had tried to end reservations for SC/ST/OBCs but the attempt was thwarted unitedly by these communities. Charging his son Rahul Gandhi of doing the same now, Modi urged these groups to defeat his plans by voting against the Congress.

Addressing a rally in Deoghar, Jharkhand, the PM said, “Congress has dangerous intentions. The Congress Shehzada has made it clear that he wants to end reservations for SC/ST/OBC. When his father Rajiv Gandhi was the chief of Congress, he had announced that reservations will be ended but due to a united opposition to his plans by SC/ST/OBC, he lost the (1989 Lok Sabha) elections badly.”

He maintained that Congress had taken out advertisements in newspapers during Rajiv Gandhi’s rule, declaring reservations as bondage and bonded labour. Modi said Congress wants to shatter the unity among SC/ST/OBC and the day this happens it will end reservations for them.

Later in Bihar, PM Modi applauded the role of his alliance partners and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar in the development of the state, describing him as a “popular CM” who pulled the state out of the “jungle raj”, alluding to the erstwhile RJD governments.

He inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects, including an All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Darbhanga, worth ₹12,000 crore.
