A man has been fined Rs 8,000 for misusing the alarm chain on the down Agartala-Lokmanya Tilak Express, in a move that highlights Indian Railways’ strict stance on such violations. The incident occurred on 15 November 2024, near Barpeta Road Station, when the passenger pulled the alarm chain without a valid reason, causing the train to halt at kilometre 296/1.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) swiftly responded to the situation, apprehending the offender and initiating legal proceedings. The offender was charged under Section 141 of the Railway Act for delaying the train and causing operational disruption. The Special Magistrate Court of Bongaigaon imposed the Rs 8,000 fine, marking a significant step in the Railways’ efforts to curb the misuse of alarm chains.
Alarm chains are an essential safety feature on trains, designed for use only in extreme emergencies involving safety or security concerns. Misusing the alarm chain is an offence that can lead to arrest and hefty fines, as demonstrated in this case.
The North East Frontier Railway (NEFR) has intensified its crackdown on such violations, following similar measures by Eastern Railway in recent weeks. Earlier this year, NEFR investigated five similar cases in the Alipurduar Division and eight in the Katihar Division, with strict actions being taken against offenders. This latest fine serves as a reminder of the serious consequences passengers may face if they misuse train safety features.
