Rahul Gandhi: Congress sikh leaders defend Rahul Gandhi’s remarks

After BJP leaders criticised Rahul Gandhi’s comments in the US about the state of Sikhs in India, the Congress on Friday fielded two Sikh leaders from Punjab, Pratap Singh Bajwa and Charanjit Singh Channi, to defend Gandhi and to question the BJP government’s handling of the farmers’ agitation.

Contending that only the BJP was making an issue of Gandhi’s statement, Bajwa said that Sikhs agreed with what Gandhi had said and that turbans were worn by others too. “Other than four Sikhs of the BJP, no one else in the world has reacted. Other than four masks of the BJP, every Sikh in the world has endorsed the words of Rahul Gandhi. They stand by him… Every Sikh in the world finds it good that there is someone who is there to protect them… We own ‘kisan’ (farming) and ‘jawan’ (serving in the armed forces). They (BJP government) finished the ‘jawan’ by stopping the recruitment in the army. Now, they have finished the farmers,” he said.

Bajwa further said, “BJP leadership promised the MSP (minimum support price) when they withdrew the three farm laws. But till now, they have not withdrawn any case… A farmer in Punjab is an Indian citizen. How can he be stopped from entering the capital? The Haryana government erected cement walls. Nails were installed to puncture tractor tyres. One person died and several were injured in the firing… Turban is not only for Sikhs. Farmers of Haryana, UP, Dalit brothers also tie turbans… He (Gandhi) spoke for every single person.”
