In a testament to the success of MotoGP Bharat 2023, an analysis report on its impact sheds light on the event’s economic influence, which made a total contribution of more than Rs 392 crore – a pivotal moment in India’s motorsport history.
The MotoGP Bharat 2023 Impact Report has been produced by the Indian Sports Management Association with sports consulting and research agency, The Playknox. Hosted at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida from September 22 to 24 last year, MotoGP Bharat 2023 drew a significant crowd throughout the weekend. This is the same circuit where three editions of the Formula One Indian Grand Prix took place between 2011 and 2013.
But, this major sporting event was chucked out of the F1 calendar mostly due to tax disagreements between the then Akhilesh Yadav-led UP government and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – the international governing body of motorsport – and the Jaypee Group’s financial woes. As a result, this track went dormant until the debut of the motorcycle road racing series, MotoGP, in September last year.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath – accompanied by other central and state ministers as well as celebrities – watched the final race that was won by Marco Bezzecchi of the Mooney VR46 Ducati (GP22) team.
The total attendance figures paint a picture of the event’s popularity:
- Friday (Sept 22): 17,776
- Saturday (Sept 23): 35,381
- Sunday (Sept 24, race day): 58,605
According to the report, the public’s response to MotoGP Bharat 2023 was positive, with a median satisfaction score of six out of seven on the Likert Scale. Fans aged between 26 and 35 expressed their motivation for attending – ranging from prior F1 Grand Prix experiences to a love for bikes and motorsports.
Economic impact
The economic impact of MotoGP Bharat 2023 reverberated across local and non-local sectors, with attendees and spectators injecting substantial sums of money into the economy:
- Spend on local products and services: Rs 392,09,80,454 (Rs 392.09 crore)
- Spend on non-local products and services: Rs 31,33,33,440 (Rs 31.33 crore)
- Spend by visitors outside Delhi/NCR/UP: Rs 105,29,63,274 (Rs 105.29 crore)
The report stated that spectators spent Rs 72,60,41,963 (Rs 72.6 crore), with 31.1 percent on accommodation, 27.8 percent on transport services, 21.6 percent on food, 11.3 percent on other local purchases, and 8.2 percent on other recreational services.
Attendees spent Rs 319,49,38,491 (Rs 319.49 crore) with 46.5 percent on accommodation, 40.1 percent on food and 5.8 percent on other local purchases.
Overall, the MotoGP Bharat 2023 Impact Report stands as a testament to the event’s triumph, highlighting its economic contribution and setting the stage for a brighter future for motorsports in India.
