Quad foreign ministers may meet on January 21 in Washington

Foreign ministers of India, US, Australia and Japan – the four nations comprising the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad – may meet on January 21 to set the agenda for the grouping as India plans to host the Quad summit later this year.

The ministers are expected to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president on January 20. The meeting, if held, will give India, Japan and Australia an opportunity to understand the agenda for Quad under the Trump administration. ET had reported that the Trump administration may dilute the Biden government’s agenda on climate change and health for Quad.
Japanese government officials on Monday confirmed that the four foreign ministers are exploring the possibility of a meeting in Washington.

The meeting will underscore that the Trump administration is attaching importance to collaboration among the four nations amid the intensifying rivalry between the US and China in the Indo-Pacific region, according to reports in the Japanese media.
