In his speech at the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Joe Biden mostly joked about Donald Trump, but took some time to roast the press too, as well as a special shout out for Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert of Colorado — and an infamous incident.
The WHCD kicked off the show on Saturday with a replay of President Barack Obama roasting Trump, who was in the audience of that dinner in 2011. Matt Friend then took to the floor of the dinner to do his impersonation of Trump responding to that, and delivered some jokes within jokes as he mocked what Trump would say to try to roast the gathered press and attendees. The audience response to the bit was not entirely enthusiastic.
After that opening act, Biden took to the mic and immediately came out hard against Trump, making fun of him for sleeping in court, referencing Stormy Daniels, and jabbing about Trump’s former VP Mike Pence not endorsing the ex-president. The audience was considerably more enthusiastic for that.
Before moving on to do jokes about the press, Biden took a few seconds to make fun of Boebert, who last year was at the center of incident in which she and a friend were asked to leave a theater over alleged inappropriate touching. Which was the basis of Biden’s joke.
“Look, being here is a reminder that folks face what’s going on in Congress is political theater. That’s not true,” the President said. “If Congress were theater, they’d have thrown out Lauren Boebert a long time ago.”
At the time of this post Boebert had not responded on social media to the joke.
