THE plane carrying the body of Alex Salmond made a love heart shape in the skies over Scotland before touching down.
The privately hired aircraft landed at Aberdeen Airport shortly before 2pm this afternoon.
The ex-First Minister’s body has finally been repatriated to his homeland, six days on from his shock death.
The Alba Party leader passed away after collapsing at a forum in North Macedonia last Saturday.
Mr Salmond’s body left Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport in the southeast European country onboard an AirX Charter flight.
Before landing, the aircraft, which was the most tracked flight in the world on FlightRadar, made a love heart shape in the skies over Aberdeenshire.
His casket was draped in a Saltire and was met by a hearse on the tarmac at Aberdeen Airport.
A lone bagpiper played as the coffin was wheeled across over to a hearse.
Loved ones and colleagues, including long-term friend and acting Alba chief Kenny MacAskill.
The independence icon’s widow Moira asked supporters to get involved to make his final trip memorable.
The Yes Bikers led a convoy along a 45-mile route from Aberdeen Airport to Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.
Fans were asked to come and drive behind them while those on foot were encouraged to line the roads with saltires and show their support.
A spokesperson for group All Under One Banner said: “We have all been used to Alex being like a member of our own extended family.
“In recognition of this Alex’s wife Moira invites anyone wishing to welcome him home to join him on one last journey.
“If you’re not in a car and you live along the route, get your flags out and give him a wave.”
Plans are being put in place for for a private family funeral along with a more public memorial service.
