ACTOR Pierce Brosnan has been charged with trespassing after allegedly hiking into off-limits parts of Yellowstone National Park.
The James Bond and Mamma Mia! star was cited by U.S. District court for entering into a “thermal area” and “closure violation” at Mammoth Terraces according to court documents viewed by The U.S. Sun.
He allegedly entered the restricted areas of the park on November 1.
Weeks prior, Brosnan, 70, was reportedly filming Unholy Trinity with Samuel L. Jackson in the area.
The court docket, reviewed by Business Insider, labels the two charges as a “petty offense.”
Brosnan, who has proclaimed himself to be an “environmentalist” on social media, has been ordered to appear in court in Wyoming on January 23, 2024.
While many visitors may often venture off the designated paths at Yellowstone National Park, the consequences can be serious.
It can result in up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the Daily Mail.
A Connecticut woman was reportedly held in jail for seven days and fined $2,000 for veering off the designated path to walk towards the thermal area.
She was also banned from the national park for two years.
Exploring closed off areas can also lead to dangerous ramifications.
Since the 1800s, at least 20 people have died in thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park, according to NBC News.
As recently as November 2022, the foot of a dead man from Los Angeles was found floating in one of the park’s hot springs.
As no one witnessed what happened, park officials told NBC News that it remains unclear how he died.
The park encourages visitors to stay safe by following the designated boardwalks and trails on its website.
It specifically says that doing so can “protect you and delicate thermal formations.”
Representatives for Brosnan did not immediately respond to The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.
