Almost a week after the mysterious fire at Phoenix Secondary School, north of Durban, the Head of Department visited the school today, Monday, 22 January.
PHOENIX SECONDARY SCHOOL TORCHED AHEAD OF MATRIC RESULTS RELEASE
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, the Head of the Department, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, visited Phoenix Secondary School under the Pinetown District, to assess the fire damage of the Administration Block of the school.
This after Phoenix Secondary School experienced a suspected arson attack on Tuesday, 16 January, which destroyed a significant part of its infrastructure.
The school library and part of the admin block where textbooks and stationery were being stored are among the affected buildings.
DEVELOPMENTS ON THE FIRE INCIDENT?
Ngcobo’s visit to the school did not publicly give direction on the nitty-gritty details pertaining to the reconstruction of the affected blocks and update on the investigation.
Thus far, The South African has learnt of no arrests or anyone taken in for questioning.
Meanwhile, ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the community of Phoenix to provide information about the arsonist who set the school on fire.
“We are calling on the police to work together with the community of Phoenix, and conduct a swift and thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind this fire,” the party said.

The party conducted an oversight on Thursday, 18 January, led by the party’s provincial head Zwakele Mncwango.
“ActionSA assessed Phoenix Secondary School after the school caught fire. It is really sad that someone can decide to petrol bomb the school a night before the official opening. I have engaged with the Police Commissioner to get a special team to investigate this,” he reacted on X last week.
