Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Patrick Mayo says he won’t choose a team for his son Khanyisa Mayo.
The 25-year-old Cape Town City striker is one of the most sought-after players in the country. Having scored 22 league goals in the past two seasons, Mayo has been linked with several top teams in the past few months. His father Patrick Mayo, is a Kaizer Chiefs legend, having won several teams with the Soweto giants.
Speaking to KickOff, the retired footballer said his son has attracted North African clubs.
“North Africa is an in-thing at the moment. They are taking all our talent. Even the coaches are being snatched by the North African teams,” Mayo told KickOff.
Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo weighs in about his son’s future
“I think they are paying well in North Africa, and their clubs are always playing in the Caf Champions League, so some of them want to reinforce their teams going forward to the Champions League.
“Because I am not the one who is calling the shots, I have no choice but to support whatever my son decides, whatever decision he takes,” he added.
Before joining Kaizer Chiefs, Patrick Mayo made his name at Bush Bucks where he scored over 50 goals. He joined Amakhosi in 2003 winning back-to-back league titles. He has warned Khanyisa about joining North African teams, citing physicality as a challenge.
“I can’t choose a team for Khanyisa. Whatever decision he takes as a parent, I have to support him,” Mayo added.
“The North African game is too physical. I wouldn’t say he will fit or not fit, but he needs to be mentally strong. That’s if he ends up playing in North Africa. Their game is very physical,” he said.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star believes the time is right for Mayo to leave Cape Town City.
“I think it’s the right time for him to move. I mean, for a player to grow, he shouldn’t stay in one place. He will need to face new challenges.”
