Parties welcome Gwamanda’s exit as Joburg mayor

Political parties have welcomed the resignation of Kabelo Gwamanda as executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

Gwamanda who was elected in May 2023 finally handed in his resignation letter on Tuesday, 13 August. His resignation will be effective from a date determined by the Speaker.

ACTIONSA WELCOMES THE RESIGNATION OF KABELO GWAMANDA

ActionSA said Gwamanda’s tenure of just over a year could only be characterised by failure and catastrophic incompetence. The city’s downward spiral is evident across Johannesburg.

ActionSA caucus leader in the City of Johannesburg Nobuhle Mthembu said residents have suffered under a Mayor whose ineptitude and habitual blame-shifting, never self-included despite his unambiguous executive responsibility, have led to a disastrous state of service delivery across the city.

Mthembu said they argued from the day of his election that Gwamanda, who replaced Thapelo Amad, another disastrous mayor from Al Jama-ah, was not fit for the role and would certainly be unable to meet the job’s demands.

“ActionSA looks forward to the election of a new Mayor, which we are confident will be an improvement on the objectively disastrous tenure of Gwamanda.”

Former City of Johannesburg mayor and Democratic Alliance (DA) member Mpho Phalatse said it was about time Gwamanda resigned. However, this is half of the problem solved.

“It would not help the city if we replace mayor Gwamanda with an equally incompetent mayor or someone who is disinterested or simply has ulterior motives that would not benefit residents,” she said.

Likewise, the Johannesburg Crisis Alliance welcomed the resignation. Still, it emphasised that it was not a victory but a critical moment for a renewed commitment to better governance in the metro municipality.
