The upcoming Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is already generating significant buzz as it delves into the harrowing 1999 hijacking of an Indian aircraft by Pakistani militants. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including veterans like Pankaj Kapur and Naseeruddin Shah, the limited web show is set to be a gripping portrayal of one of India’s most notorious aviation crises.
Pankaj Kapur REJECTS the idea of promotions, Naseeruddin Shah adds, “Audience smells out what they want to watch”
Recently, the makers of the series hosted a roundtable discussion with the cast, where Pankaj Kapur and Naseeruddin Shah shared their candid thoughts on the role of promotions in the entertainment industry.
Pankaj Kapur on the Nature of Promotions
Pankaj Kapur reflected on the promotional process, acknowledging that while necessary, it is a different experience from the actual filmmaking. “We did what we were supposed to do. Till the point we were supposed to do, we did it. It is okay to a point. I mean, why not do promotions side by side? But the kind of involvement that there is when you are doing the project is of a different level. Even the expressions you will see on our faces, even the body language that there will be, and even the questions you might have would be of a different nature altogether. Just now, it’s more like a distant memory, and we are trying to dig in our minds,” he said, highlighting the contrast between the intensity of shooting and the more detached process of promoting the final product.
Naseeruddin Shah’s Take on the Impact of Promotions
Naseeruddin Shah, known for his straightforward views, expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of promotions. He stated, “I think promotions make no difference. I think actors like doing promotions, showing their faces on TV screens. It makes no difference. The audience smells out what they want to watch.”
Shah drew on his experiences from the past, recalling how the anticipation for a Dilip Kumar film could build for years, regardless of promotional efforts. “Our saying that we work hard, we made it with love; it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make a difference to them. You worked hard, why are you self-praising?” he added, emphasizing that the audience’s choices are driven more by personal interest than by promotional campaigns.
