Pankaj Jha, known for his role as Vidhayak Ji in TVF’s Panchayat, recently expressed his frustration with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over losing the role of Sultan Qureshi in Gangs of Wasseypur. In an interview with Digital Commentary, Jha revealed that he was the original choice for the role before it was given to Pankaj Tripathi. Recalling the incident, Jha mentioned how he received the offer while shooting in Patna and was promised the role by Kashyap. However, upon his return, he discovered that Tripathi had been cast instead.

When asked about the politics in the film industry, Jha maintained a resilient attitude. He stated, “While films like Satya and Gulaal create actors, they also make directors. But there are so many timid and spineless people here that they can’t even keep their word.” Despite the setback, Jha emphasized that he wasn’t affected by the behind-the-scenes manoeuvres and refused to let the ‘backstabbers’ win.
Reflecting on whether the role of Sultan could have altered his career trajectory, Jha seemed content with his journey. He explained that he didn’t dwell on what might have been, and instead, focused on his current successes. Although he was critical of the film industry’s politics, Jha clarified that he held no personal grudges against Kashyap. “Nevertheless, I still love Anurag very much and have no complaints against anyone,” he added.
Pankaj Jha, an alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), has built a respectable career with notable roles in films like Monsoon Wedding, Company, and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. Despite his dissatisfaction with the Gangs of Wasseypur incident, Jha continues to make his mark in the industry. Recently, he also accused Pankaj Tripathi of glamorizing his struggle and humorously noted that Tripathi had even stolen “another actor’s slippers.”
