It has been an interesting year for Hong Kong’s dining scene. With 2024 being the first full year without Covid-19 restrictions, there was a lot of hope and optimism that business would pick up.
While every month we have diligently documented new restaurant openings – there are never fewer than a dozen highlighted each time – we’ve also heard plenty of gripes from the hospitality industry that things are tougher than ever.
2024 has also been a year in which Hongkongers have sought cheaper dining options across the border in mainland China or have taken advantage of the historically low value of the Japanese yen to eat their fill in Japan – or both. In Hong Kong, more Chinese restaurants have opened, from hotpot chains to bubble tea brands and plenty of regional cuisine specialists.
As the year draws to a close, we’re once again taking stock of the top 10 restaurant openings in Hong Kong – an entirely subjective list.

Sometimes all you want is a simple plate of dumplings and a steaming bowl of noodles, and this tiny spot opened by the team behind Porker and Birdie in Central is a charmingly retro spot for a quick bite.
