One pan gut-healthy steak enchilada bowl that takes just 20 minutes

This gut-healthy  one-pan dish can make dinnertimes a breeze, being quick to make, full of vegetables and great for your gut.

The chefs at EatingWell have come up with the steak enchilada dish, requiring only one pan and taking less than 20 minutes from start to finish.

The chefs say this is a must-do to “support gut health, promote healthy digestions, support your immune system and reduce pesky symptoms like fatigue and headaches.”

The dinner-time showstopper is filled with 10g of fibre and prebiotic black beans that support the bacteria in your gut and can have a whole host of benefits to your health.

Gut health is a key part of your overall well-being and is often overlooked. Guidance from the NHS suggests that neglecting your gut health can be linked to a range of health conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, and mental health disorders.

GP Dr Alexis Missick added: ” A healthy gut is closely linked to a reduced frequency of illnesses, fewer sick days, and a lower risk of allergies and autoimmune conditions.

“Even if we consume the healthiest foods, the benefits can be compromised if our intestinal lining isn’t in good shape to digest them efficiently. A healthy gut lining ensures that we can absorb and utilise the nutrients from our food effectively, maximising the benefits of our dietary choices. Therefore, nurturing gut health is fundamental for enhancing overall wellbeing and vitality.”

To support your gut health it is suggested your diet should be high in fibre (wholemeal bread, brown rice and beans) low in saturated and processed fats, the inclusion of healthy fats from olive oil and avocados and avoid acidic foods (fizzy drinks, citrus fruits, salad dressing).

This recipe aims to encapsulate these ideas and create a delicious dish that can taste amazing and be good for your stomach. Chef and recipe developer Julia Levy includes extra-virgin olive oil, pound sirloin steak, thinly sliced, 30pc-lower-sodium taco seasoning, sweetcorn, salsa, no-salt-added black beans, grated cheese, whole-wheat tortillas, brown rice and fresh coriander.

Start by preheating a cast-iron skillet over medium to high heat for five minutes before adding the olive oil, steak strips and seasoning. Wait until the steak is brown, around five more minutes, before taking it out and resting on a plate. Without washing or wiping the pan.

Then add the sweetcorn, salsa and black beans to the pan, scraping the bottom of the pan to incorporate the brown bits. Lower the heat and add the cheese cook out for two more minutes, gently stirring until creamy. Finally add the sliced tortilla strips, fresh coriander and cooked steak back into the pan before serving over brown rice.
