If you want a poached egg for breakfast but do not wish to spend time cooking, then there is a quick and easier way to make a “perfect” poached egg without using a saucepan.
Erica Wides a professional chef who goes by the name @thechefsmartypants on social media, has explained you can make a “firm” poached egg with a “runny” yolk using a microwave.
On TikTok, Chef Erica explained: “Maybe you don’t want to boil a pot of water every morning, so poach your egg in the microwave! This is how I do it every day.”
This simple method requires no saucepan, boiling water, or cooking over a stove, and takes less than a minute.
To begin, crack your egg into a small bowl or ramekin. Erica said: “You need something that is about twice as deep as the height of the egg. Remember, it’s the microwave so don’t use plastic.”

Next, you will need to pour cold water over the egg until the egg is completely covered.
Erica said: “You want to submerge the egg by at least half an inch to an inch. The egg has to be submerged otherwise you could risk a egg-splousion (explosion).”
Then, place your small water-and-egg-filled bowl in your microwave. Place it on high and cook for less than 50 seconds.
The timing on the microwave to get your poached egg fully cooked and “perfect” will be different depending on your microwave. For Erica, it takes approximately 44 seconds in a microwave with an 1100 wattage.
Erica said: “Every microwave is different but on mine, it takes 44 seconds on high. This has been a lot of trial and error over the years.
“This one is 44 seconds but my old microwave was 46 seconds so you have to play around and figure it out. It should be anywhere between 35 to 50 seconds, but it also depends on how you like your egg.
“I like mine perfect because I’m a chef and it has to be perfect, which means firm white and runny yolk.”
