When I was a child in the ‘90s, there was absolutely nothing more glamorous to me than prom. I loved watching my babysitters parade across the school gym, resplendent in French tips, glittering gowns, and hairsprayed updos. Olivia Rodrigo wasn’t even born in the late-’90s heyday of the so-called “prom updo”—she was born in 2003—but she was definitely channeling the grand marches of my youth at the Venice Film Festival.
For a Miu Miu-sponsored event, which Rodrigo attended with her boyfriend, actor Louis Partridge, the musician deviated from her usual long, loose hairstyles and pulled her dark hair up in a classic updo similar to those worn by my babysitters circa 1996. Her hair was gathered into a donut-shaped spiral at the top of her head with two long tendrils pulled out on either side and loosely curled around her face. We know the star loves a ‘90s moment, both sartorially and sonically, so it’s not surprising that she’d put her spin on the prom queen hairstyle of that decade—and it’s so cute on her!
Though she swapped her usual long hair for an updo, Rodrigo did stick with her go-to cat eye liner and red lipstick, though she swapped the matte color for a glossier finish. Instead of the chunky French manicure that was all the rage in the late ’90s, Rodrigo opted for a short red mani and matching pedicure just a few tones darker than her lipstick.
