Old rivalry: Man run over repeatedly in old family feud in Jaunpur | India News

VARANASI: An old rivalry between two families led to the death of Pankaj Rajbhar, 24, who was crushed under the wheels of a car allegedly driven by Chhotu Singh and Rohit Singh from his village. The incident took place in full public view in Jalalpur area of UP’s Jaunpur district on Wednesday. While the accused fled the scene, the incident sparked tension in the area and led to protests.
Jaunpur ASP Arvind Kumar Verma Thursday said an FIR was lodged and police were looking for the duo .
“As the vehicle sped on the street, everyone ran in panic, and people fell on the road. When Pankaj appeared, they ran over him, backed the vehicle up and drove over him again. No one could stop the vehicle, and attempts to pull Pankaj from under it failed, causing more injuries to those who tried,” Pankaj’s relative, Satyam Rajbhar, said.
Rajbhars and Singhs, who belong to agrarian families in Jaunpur, had an old rivalry over maintaining dominance in the area. Their groups used to gather near a liquor shop at Makar crossing, where the incident took place. Some recent issues had caused a flare-up among the two groups. Pankaj was rushed to a hospital in Varanasi, where doctors declared him dead. His relatives returned with his body and staged a sit-in by blocking the road, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
